California State University Northridge
Director of Faculty Development
Greater Los Angeles area
Nearly ten years ago I joined faculty development leading New Faculty Orientations with a background in Educational Psychology and Child & Adolescent Development and a dissertation focused on conflict resolution. Three years later I would step into the Director role where shortly afterwards, a system-wide Graduation Initiative focused on closing race gaps and increasing graduation rates would be launched for all 23 California State Universities. It was 2016; we needed to learn and we needed a program. With my CSUN colleagues attending this year's conference, subject matter experts on our campus and after engaging in extensive self-work (interrogating whiteness including my own biases), I co-developed a program that bridged race-conscious and equity-minded teaching with eLearning programming for faculty teaching high DFU courses. This included showing faculty their individual course-level race gaps in their courses in collaboration with our Institutional Research Office. The success of this effort has now been institutionalized at CSUN: (1) through our program called The Institute for Transformative Teaching & Learning, and (2) for the first time under my leadership, inclusivity and equity-minded principles have been woven into the mission and programming of our Faculty Development center at CSUN. https://www.csun.edu/undergraduate-studies/faculty-development/institute-transformative-learning-and-teaching
