Popovic has a doctorate in Education from Birmingham University in the United Kingdom. She has a distinguished career as an educational developer, researcher, teacher and author. In collaboration with Birmingham University School of Education colleagues, she developed and taught a master’s program in medical education that was aimed at medical practitioners. This was one of the first in the UK. While at Birmingham she won the university-wide teaching award. In 2007 she became head of Educational Development at Birmingham City University. There she led the development and implementation of an institutional teaching and learning strategy which resulted in improved student engagement. She was the principal investigator for Creating Future Proof Graduates, a research project into improving students’ transition into employment.

Following a life-changing health scare, Popovic and her husband embarked on an adventure and moved to Canada, where in 2011 she took up a position as an educational developer at York University. Soon after she arrived at York University, she was appointed as the inaugural director of the Teaching Commons. After 7 years as Director Popovic returned to her first love of teaching and research in the Faculty of Education. She continues to contribute to educational development in Canada and the UK. In 2018 she was entered on the SEDA Roll of Honour in the UK, and the following year was awarded the Distinguished Career Award by the EDC (Educational Developers Caucus) in Canada.

Publications include 4 books - co-authored with David Green Understanding Undergraduates 2012 is based on her research into lecturers' preconceptions about their students. Co-authored with another David, Baume this time, Advancing Practice in Academic Practice 2016 is used as a course text in several courses for educational developers. She has also edited a book on conferences, an EDC guide and journal articles. Her most recent work is the Educational Developers Thinking Allowed site co-curated with Dr Fiona Smart from Edinburgh Napier University. She is currently working on an undergraduate Certificate in Educational Development which will be offered to students on the BA Educational Studies program at York University.
